In this post I am going to talk about the Q&A section of stockvalue.com.au. which in fact is modern web 2.0 forums that recognizes people’s contribution.

Stockvalue features the ability for users to ask and answer questions, and, through membership and active participation, to vote questions and answers up or down and edit questions and answers in a fashion similar to wiki or digg. Users of StockValue can earn reputation points and “badges”; for example, a person is awarded 2 reputation points for receiving an “up” vote on an answer given to a question, and can receive badges for their valued contributions, which represents a kind of gamification of the traditional Q&A site or australian stock forums.
The idea of this section of the website is based on Stackoverflow.

At the core of the value investing strategy is looking for stocks that are being traded well below what they are worth inherently. In other words, you simply need to find well established companies that have temporarily dipped on the stock market that have historical strengths.

Traders make money from stock market trading by using foresight to predict possible value increases and decreases, and selling and buying stock based on this foresight. If a mine has a collapse, you don’t want to hear about it a week after it happens, you need same day information.
In the last 16 years since the ASX 200 has been around as an index, for 12 of those 16 years we’ve seen a rise in the month of December. Only four years saw losses for the month.
So it does seem as though the market tends to rise in December.

Google stock screener is a free tool by Google that provides basic stocks filtering capabilities for US share market. Unfortunately though this service does not cover Australian stock market.

Although this service can not be used for Australian market there is no real Geo restriction on the tool. In other words you can access the service from inside Australia and screen US market but If you are looking for a solution that covers Australian exchange (ASX) you better look somewhere else.

One of the most sophisticated solution that still is free is Stock Value. This service is a free ASX stock screener.

With great community of investors using this service on a daily basis I can’t think of any better alternative to Google stock screener.

Couple of months ago I wrote about how to find the value stocks in the Australian stock market ASX (Although with the new competition their monopoly might be over soon). And then I mentioned that the best way or maybe one of the most effective ways to find cheap stocks is to use stock scanner or screeners.

A stock screening tool is a tool that filter ASX shares based on different parameters and then close down the list of shares to those that match different criteria.

One of the most advanced and yet free offerings is StockValue.com.au. This site is a free stock screener that helps you with ASX stock valuation.

Although this website does not calculate fair value for any stock it provides almost total access to ASX stocks history and data and lets you filter the stock anyway you want.

Did I mention it is free? I think I did. I am not sure how long they can keep a service with such a high quality free but for now all you need is an email address and then all part of their service is accessible.

I believe finding an undervalued stock is an art. Not that many people are extremely successful in the market but those that are make an easy living by just investing in the market.

Theoretically Australian stock market should be the best place to make money. We have all the information necessary to valuate a stock. We know what the P/E of a stock is, we know if a stock worth even less than it is booking value or not, we can see the history. So why can’t we just use these information and buy the best stocks?

Well, I think the logic is flawless. If you know everything about a company you should be able to come up with it is fair value. Problem here is most stocks are over valued. And the process of checking each and every individual stock is tiresome. Also there is no fixed formula on how to evaluate a share value. I believe that is why not that many people become billionaires playing with ASX. Only few have their own, secret formula.

I for one have my own way of finding stocks, a way that has been doing great (by my own standards though!). My suggestion is that you also try a stock screener like StockValue to filter the market and then focus on few securities. That way you can manage your time and researches best.
